Record of Ragnarök is an anime series adapted from the manga written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui and illustrated by Ajichika.
The series follows a bold premise that every 1000 years, the gods of various mythologies gather to decide the fate of humanity. In the latest meeting, they vote unanimously to exterminate the human race, but Brunhilde; one of the thirteen Valkyries, intervenes and proposes a final cosmic showdown in which humanity proves their worth: a tournament called Ragnarök. Thirteen human champions will face thirteen gods in one-on-one battles. The first side to achieve seven victories will determine the outcome of humanity.
The series features a diverse cast of characters from different historical periods and cultures, blending theology, mythology and martial arts. We see the likes of Lu Bu (Chinese) , Adam (Theology), Kojiro Sasaki (Japanese), Jack the Ripper (Mythology), Buddha (Buddhism), Thor (Mythology), Zeus (Mythology), Poseidon (Mythology), Heracles (Mythology), Shiva (Theology) and many more.
The Main focus of the series is the action and spectacle of the fights, which are often intense, unpredictable, and full of surprises. The series also explores the themes of courage, faith, loyalty, and redemption, as both the humans and the gods face their own challenges and dilemmas. The series also incorporates elements of humour, drama, tragedy, as well as references to various myths and legends. With a unique art style which combines realistic and exaggerated features, a distinctive aesthetic is created that suits the tone and mood of the story.
Record of Ragnarok has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences:
Many praised the series for its originality, creativity, diverse and interesting characters, thrilling and epic battles, philosophical moments, impressive voice acting and music, and its faithful adaptation of the manga. However, others criticized the series for its inconsistent and poor animation quality, excessive use of flashbacks and exposition, lack of character development and depth, repetitive and predictable plot structure, controversial and divisive character design choices, as well as its deviation from the manga in some aspects.
Personally, we enjoyed watching Record of Ragnarök for its entertainment value and its intriguing concept. We found some of the characters to be memorable and likable, such as Adam, Kojiro Sasaki, Buddha, and Brunhilde. We also appreciated some of the messages and themes that the series conveyed, such as the importance of free will, compassion, hope, and resilience. However, we also agree with some of the criticisms that the series received, such as the pacing issues that plagued some of the episodes. We also felt that some of the characters were highly underdeveloped or underutilized, such as Lu Bu, Poseidon, Odin, and Loki and Thor. We also longed for a deeper exploration of the worldbuilding and mythology aspects that it touched on throughout the episodes.
Overall, we would rate Record of Ragnarök a 7.5 out of 10. It is definitely a fun and exciting anime series that offers a fresh and original take on the clash between humans and gods but it also has some flaws and shortcomings that prevent it from reaching its full potential. However, it still delivers a satisfying and enjoyable experience for fans of action-packed Shonen anime.Â
Whether it's the electrifying duels or the contemplative moments, Record of Ragnarok is a series that definitely leaves a lasting impact.
