My Neighbor Totoro is a cinematic gem that continues to resonate with audiences decades after its release. Personally, we enjoyed My Neighbor Totoro and we'd rate it 8 out of 10. The film portrays the explorative and innocent side of children as well as how this changes as you grow up: Mei often wanders off on her own without worry, while Satsuki bears more responsibility and understands the position her parents are in, while their father is too busy working or at the hospital, to truly understand his children's thoughts and experiences. However, despite how cute and cuddly they are, it does feel like the creatures in this film; especially Totoro and his companions, do not have enough of a story that explains who they are or that even shows their personalities. Even though My Neighbor Totoro is more of a wholesome and feel-good movie, as opposed to that with a deeper story, we'd definitely still recommend it.
