Review: How to Keep a Mummy

Written by Pfunzo Ralinala

How to Keep a Mummy is about a young middle schooler, who receives mysterious packages from his father every month. Instead of cute souvenirs he is sent supernatural objects like curse dolls and even ancient scripts. However, in the first episode a tiny mummy is delivered to him.

The anime series follows Sora Kashiwagi and Mii-kun alongside his friends and their supernatural pets. At first glance, the anime doesn’t appear to have any significant themes that can grip an audience. It has the cutesy anime style of Mii-kun, the mummy and other supernatural characters. However, as the series continues there are powerful themes that come about that are impactful.

How the pet and the owner mirror each other:

Themes regarding the lasting impacts of loneliness are shown in Tazuki and Conny. Conny, a supernatural pet that has experienced loneliness through being rejected by humans, has developed a selfish personality. Tazuki, on the other hand, displays this by keeping a distance from others especially in difficult situations. In this case, the creator uses the relationship of the owner and its pet to develop and showcase certain themes throughout the series.

So why watch this anime?

How to Keep a Mummy is quite refreshing in its approach to creating wholesome anime. No love triangles or romantic encounters, just friends bonding over their pets. The second is the cute supernatural creatures in the series, each one has been inspired by Folklore. In addition, the interactions between the supernatural creatures is nothing short of adorable.

Since it's a 12 episode series, think about it as the sorbet to your next meal. You get a break from the typical anime package. The series wasn't about love putting a couple at the centre piece. Rather, How to Keep a Mummy is a family friendly anime about a chosen family.

How to Keep a Mummy gets an 8/10 rating
